Nanoporous Silicon for
High-Performance Battery Anodes
Vytas is developing a nanoporous silicon battery anode material, using a carbon-free process, for application in current lithium-ion batteries and solid state batteries where lithium electrolyte is eliminated.
Key benefits of Vytas’s nanoporous silicon:
- High Charge Density – 2700mAh/g compared to a traditional graphite anode in an Electric Vehicle (EV) of 350mAh/g.
- Low Swelling – Vytas’ nanoporous material mitigates swelling by allowing lithium to attach on the inside. Traditional silicon expands 300-400% where Vytas is targeting 20% swelling which is in line with the swelling of graphite.
- Fast Charge – a high surface area allows for fast charge and discharge. The surface area can be increased or decreased to allow for the right balance of fast change and controlling solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer.
- Strength – the structure of Vytas’ material provides strength.
- Carbon-free production – Eliminates carbon-footprint of carbothermic-sourced silicon.
- Lower costs – Scalable, simpler, more efficient process.
Vytas is partnering with industry and research organisations to develop the full potential in current-state and future-state silicon anode technologies.
